Families often have rituals and even vocabulary specific to their circle. Yesterday my husband came into the room to let me know he had “straightened the cake” as he was “concerned” it was just not acceptable to it leave as was. I was so proud of him. After 33 years of marriage, he finally became family officially.
Cake straightening is a family activity, or was under my mother’s reign. One could not simply put the cake or pie away if the cut was crooked. It was a sort of heresy to not take care of the dessert properly. It also meant that the straightener got just a bit more deliciousness on their tongue as reward.
My mother would brag that she could straighten her way around an entire cheesecake…I totally believe that.
That butterscotch cake my husband saved was totally worth the effort. Congratulations honey! Good work!
